Destination: Timaru High River Track
Description: A 12 km return walk above the lower Timaru River gorge following a good 4WD track giving access to the valley flats if the river is unfordable. The route sidles 350-400 m above the north bank of the river, dropping and regaining 200 m to cross a small side creek.
Our lunch spot and turnaround point overlooks the main flats and Junction Hut and but stops short of descending 300 m to the hut. If you have NZTopo50S on your device search for "Timaru High River Track" to display the route and elevation profile.
Details: Meeting time at the usual lakefront rendezvous is 8:30 a.m.; note the overnight change to DST! Petrol costs $10 per person.
