October day tramps

UCTC September 22, 2026
The summer programme starts at the beginning of October. Three tramps are planned for this month. Weekend 3rd / 4th Carrick Water Race middle section EM 2 Martin Unwin Weekend 17th / 18th Melina Ridge Track to Smiths Creek - Lindis Pass E 1 Neil Marshall Weekend 31st /1st Camp Flat, Blue River EM 3 Nini Ripandelli There is no need to register for these tramps. Simply turn up at the lakefront car park at the foot of MDougall St, ready to leave at 8.30 a.m.  If you want picking up en route or to meet at the start of the tramp, contact the leader in advance. The leader will post on the blog a couple of days before the weekend to confirm the day the tramp will take place, once the weather forecast is clear. Blue River day tramp Saturday 31st October

The weather forecast is looking very good (sunny and 16C after a frosty start) for Saturday, so please meet at the lakefront car park at the foot of McDougall St, ready to leave at 8.30 a.m. This is a short (4 / 5 hours) return walk, but we will be following an advanced tramping track which may be slippery after the recent rain. The valley was as lovely as ever on a recent recce. Text the leader, Nini Ripandelli (021 1325 116) , if you would like to meet the group at either the Hawea petrol station (9.00 a.m.) or at the Blue Pools car park (just after 10.00 a.m.) Please remember your own personal 1st Aid kit and PLB (if you have one).

Day tramp - Saturday 17th October

The second day tramp of the summer programme will wander along the first few km of the Melinga Ridge track, starting from the DoC signpost just short of the southern side of the summit of Lindis Pass, and back. This will be a gentle amble into the hills. We will aim to reach Smiths Creek before turning around and retracing our steps. 13km return with a small amount of ascent both ways. We cross a stream both ways and may get wet feet. Meet at the lakeside car park at the foot of McDougall St at 8.20am ready to organise carpooling, sign in and depart at 8.30 a.m. There is no need to register for this tramp. You are expected to bring a personal 1st Aid kit. If you have a PLB please bring that too. Please text the leader if you would like to use either the car park at the intersection of SH84 with Riverbank Road (8.35 a.m.) or the cafe at Tarras (9.00 a.m.) as a meeting point. The ...
