Grading System

The club uses a two-tier grading system, with each tramp graded for physical difficulty (a grunt grade) and for technical difficulty (a gnarly grade).

Effort
Technical Difficulty

E
4-6 hrs/day, low gradient, altitude
gains less than 500 m.

1
Open and well-formed track, no
significant river crossings.

EM
5-7 hrs/day, altitude gains up to
800 m.

2
Well-formed and marked track but
may include short tree-rooted or
rocky sections and minor stream
crossings.
M
7-8 hrs/day, climbs of up to 1,000
m with some steep sections.

3
Track mostly well-formed but will
include tree-rooted or rocky
sections and/or river crossings.
MH
Up to 8+ hrs/day, altitude gains
steep and likely to exceed 1,000
m.

4
Usually tracked but may include
untracked sections demanding
careful footing, and multiple river
crossings.
H
Up to 10+ hrs/day, altitude gains
up to 1,500 m.
5
Track may be only a route, terrain
often steep and exposed, requiring
confidence on rough ground and
modest technical skills, and multiple
river crossings.
